Retention Ability on Documents

I can see a list of Document that are connected to Related Parties but If I choose to Archive it archives the Document Type. Could we change this as a way to archive old document instead of archiving the Document Type. Example any files that are over 5 years we do not need to keep in certain document types, while others we need to retain for up to 7 years.
