Email Status

When I send out any emails, it automatically changes it to a closed status. I am usually sending out an email requesting a missing document in which I need a response. I keep trying to remember to go to the email after and flip it to active as the thread is still active. Is there a way to switch this setting or let us determine the status as we send out the email so I do not lose emails in the closed bin. Thank you!
